So yesterday I went to
Daitoku-ji, a Zen Buddhist temple complex, and boy was it beautiful. Basically, it is a compound in which there are many sub-temples, each with its own head abbot. Its beauty was understated in a lot of ways, as you might expect, and I loved the sort of
grayscale color scheme. The roofs were this metallic silver color, but in the light they might as well have been a shade of white (haha, shade of white. Is there such a thing?). The whole thing is surrounded by the city of Kyoto, but within the walls one might even forget this fact. There was a painted map of the complex within the gates, and it depicts the complex in an area surrounded by nature alone. I guess since then, the city has arrived. Nonetheless, it is amazing to see these things side by side.
